Philatelic Friday: Cowboys of the Silver Screen

It's been AGES since I've had a Philatelic Friday post. I've moved away from my thematic posts by day because they became a bit tiresome for me. Well that plus I was so busy with work I scarcely had time to sleep never mind maintain the blog at that level. I was inspired however by some fresh news from the US Post Office that they would be issuing a new series of four collectible stamps called Cowboys of the Silver Screen. This was right up my alley because former Palm Springs residents Gene Autry and Roy Rogers will be part of a four- stamp set honoring these legendary cowboys of the silver screen. The other two are William S. Hart, and Tom Mix. (The stamps go on sale April 17th).

You may recall from prior posts that Gene Autry rose to fame after being discovered by Will Rogers, who was already a strong force in Palm Springs.
Gene Autry first came to Palm Springs to take breaks from filming movies, then in 1940 purchased his first Palm Springs home. In 1961, Gene Autry bought a Holiday Inn hotel that went on (years later) to become the trendy Parker Meridian today. Gene Autry also owned what is now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Major League Baseball team- at the time they were called the California Angels. For over 30 years the Angels held their Spring training in Palm Springs and were a local favorite. Doubtless you recall, back on November 19th I wrote a post about the new bronze statue of Gene Autry that was dedicated here in his honor in Palm Springs, in fact on a road called Gene Autry Trail.
Autry became a very wealthy man, and later the nonprofit Gene Autry Foundation was established and is now run by his widow, Jackie Autry. To date it has donated more than $280 million to various charities in the Palm Springs area. So the legend of Gene Autry continues. I always loved Gene Autry, so I'm thrilled he will have his own postage stamp! Yippee ki yay!

Philatelic Friday: Stamps From China

Another week draws to a close, and once again it is time for a new edition of my Philatelic Friday series. This week I'm featuring Stamps from China. It seemed like a good follow up to the last Sunday Art Review: Chinese Sampler. I've always liked Chinese dragons, and was delighted to find a stamp adorned with a festive dragon. It is the perfect stamp to open today's Philatelic Friday post on Stamps from China. Being a casual student of philately, I enjoy collecting and comparing postage stamps from various countries around the world. Some of the Chinese stamps are quite colorful and decorative, as one would expect. The following stamps represent a good variety of styles and designs. Enjoy~

above: Chinese New Year, Year of the Pig

above: Leaning Bonsai

above: this house and boat are so colorful

above: another Bonsai

above: I suspect this is a Bustard, but feel free to correct me...

above: this one is actually from the USA, featuring Chinese lanterns for the new year.
Thanks for stopping by today's Philatelic Friday. Have a great weekend!

Philatelic Friday: SUP-ER Heroes Stamps

After taking a few weeks off from my Philatelic Friday series, it returns today with a dynamic installment featuring Super Heroes. Or perhaps I should say it in a loud booming and dramatic voice "SUP-ER HEROES". I thought that with all the nagging economic news, we all could use an heroic effort to boost spirits and public mood. There's nothing quite like the battle of good versus evil, when the super hero saves the day and returns order to the world. If only we had a super hero to fix things. At least we have them on stamps. (Although that doesn't seem to have helped the Post Office much). For those of you who are comic book geeks I hope you thoroughly enjoy this post.

above: Iron Man

above: Spider Woman (wow she looks angry...I wonder what that means)
above: Good old Superman. A true American hero.
Happy Philatelic Friday all!

Philatelic Friday: Cats on Stamps!

Welcome to another installment of my weekly Philatelic Friday series. This week's topic is Cats on Stamps! As many of you know, I have a Persian kitty named Owen who allows me to live in his home. I love to watch Owen in action. He stands guard, loves to hunt, perches like a hawk, and meows incessantly when something is on his mind. Owen is a very cuddly kitty; he frequently cuddles up in my lap, or sits on my laptop keyboard to help me blog. So it was an easy choice to feature cats as the topic for this week's post about stamps. This first feature above left is a series from Antigua & Barbuda. I thought these stamps were a fun way to kick off the post. For all you cat lovers out there, I hope you enjoy this week's post!

How was that for a nice international collection of cat stamps? Which one do you like best? C'mon, leave a message, it is FREE and EASY TOO!

Philatelic Friday: Stamps about Guide Dogs

Today is May 1st, the start of National Guide Dog Month. It's a perfect topic for my weekly Philatelic Friday series. Since I am resourceful and persistent, I managed to dig up a series of postage stamps from around the world about Guide Dogs! Can you image the luck? I should take this time to disclose that I worked with my company and one of our vendors to plan a month-long fundraiser in all of our stores and online for Guide Dog schools nationwide. You'll hear more about it on this blog for the next few weeks, so I apologize in advance if I blog about it too much. The exciting part is that American Idol judge and singer Paula Abdul is our spokesperson for National Guide Dog Month. If you want to see a nifty video of Paula Abdul about this, click here. But for today, I present this week's installment of Philatelic Friday: Stamps About Guide Dogs. The first one above left is from Ireland. Enjoy the rest:

Philatelic Friday: James Bond 007 Stamps

The weekend is here, so its time for another edition of my weekly Philatelic Friday series. One of the things I like about philately is the seemingly endless range of subjects and themes that have made their way onto government-issued postage stamps. I specify "government-issued stamps" to differentiate from the "create your own" stamps, where people can put virtually any image on a stamp. Instead, I focus on stamps issued by government post office services. This week's theme is one of my favorite topics so far: James Bond 007 Stamps. This sheet of stamps above left was issued by the African Republic of Congo, featuring nine different 007 scenes. For some reason I was surprised this theme was from the Congo. The remaining Bond stamps are various book covers of Ian Fleming novels, all issued by Britain's Royal Mail:

above: Goldfinger

above: Dr No

above: Diamonds Are Forever

above: Casino Royale

above: From Russia With Love

above: For Your Eyes Only
Most of you know I'm a huge James Bond fan so this was a fun subject for Philatelic Friday. I hope you enjoyed it. By the way, what was your favorite or most memorable James Bond movie? Go ahead, leave a comment, it's FREE!

Philatelic Friday: Stamps About People Helping People

Welcome to another edition of Philatelic Friday. I kicked around theme options for today's post, and settled on a broad theme of People Helping People. So I started searching Google for images of stamps and came up with an interesting collection of topics. For example, finding a Jury Duty stamp was an interesting topic for a stamp. It is all about our civic duty to help others. I found myself staring at the silhouettes of the people depicted on this Jury Duty stamp...young/old, male/female, then I tried to guess the intended ethnicity, and then who these people remind me of. How easily my mind wanders. Anyway, onto more of Philatelic Friday: Stamps About People Helping People

above: A Canadian stamp raising awareness about people with Mental Health issues
above: This charming stamp is from Hungary and is literally about People Helping Others. Sweet, isn't it?

above: From France, a stamp raising awareness of tuberculosis and public health

above: Another French stamp about public health, raising awareness of the value of fresh air to life.

above: An unusual stamp from the USA about Retarded children

above: Canada's Fire fighter's stamp...very dramatic, isn't it?

Philatelic Friday: Stamps of Easter

Since today is Good Friday, this week's theme for Philatelic Friday is Stamps of Easter. There aren't a great number of official government issued stamps with an Easter motif, but I was able to dig up a few on the Internet. Without question, Easter is my favorite holiday. For spiritual reasons, it is a time of rebirth, a time to reflect on oneself. Seasonally, Easter is synonymous with Spring, flowers blooming, and chocolate eggs. Speaking of flowers blooming, my favorite Easter flowers are white lilies, hyacinths and tulips, what about you? Well let's take a look at these Easter postage stamps, now shall we? Above left is from Slovensko, 2004.

That's all for this week's edition of Philatelic Friday. Thanks for stopping by today.

Philatelic Friday: Stamps with Flower Power!

Welcome back to another edition of my Philatelic Friday series. Since Spring is in the air, this week's theme is Stamps with Flower Power! On Wednesday I wrote a post about a recent trip to a nearby nursery and greenhouse. The mental image of those orchids and flowers has been burned into my mind's eye all week. It was the inspiration for today's flower theme for Philatelic Friday, so I hope you enjoy the visual of these stamps from around the world. As it turns out, flowers are one of the more popular subjects for government-issued postage stamps, and by looking at them, you can easily see why. The USA for instance has run over a hundred different stamps with flowers featured in some fashion. Enjoy the viewing...

above: Birds of Paradise and Gloriosa Lily, USA

above: Daisy, Germany

above: Amarillis, USA

above: Purple Loosetrife, Aland Islands

above: hibiscus, Korea

above, orchid, Canada

above: mystery flower, Romania

above: orchids, Thailand

Who knew that government run organizations could be responsible for such beauty! I hope you enjoyed this week's edition of Philatelic Friday. Have a great weekend, straight up!
